And then she heard it.

The most beautiful sound in the world.

“If you want any chance of surviving till Christmas, you let her fucking go.”

Frost.

Her captor released her immediately.

Her knees buckled, and she collapsed to a heap on the sidewalk, sobbing.

Frost had come for her.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“QUIT IT. YOU’RE freaking me the fuck out.”

Frost glanced up from his phone to find Jinx staring at him. He rolled his eyes at the big man. “I’m not doing shit. Just looking at my phone. Why are your panties in a wad?”

“You’re, like, smiling or some shit. It’s fucking weird.” Jinx sat on the barstool next to Frost in the clubhouse.

Frost barked out a laugh. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Jinx took a sip of his whiskey. “I’m talking about you being all cheerful now that you’re getting it on the regular.” He made a circle with one thumb and forefinger then poked his other forefinger through the hole.

Were it anyone else commenting on his sex life, Frost would snap that finger in half, but maybe Jinx was right. Maybe being with Rachel had melted his frosty shell. He certainly felt much happier.

“We’re gonna have to change your road name from Frost to Fuzz.”

“Oh, fuck off with that shit,” Frost said as he barked a laugh.

His phone rang, drawing his attention. “Why’s Brooke calling me?”

“Fuck if I know,” Jinx said as he swallowed the last of his whiskey. “Probably needs you to do something for the boss. Better answer it, so you don’t end up cleaning the prez’s bike with a Q-tip.”

“Hey, Brooke,” he said as he brought the phone to his ear. “What’s up?”

“Hey, Frost, I’m sorry to bother you, but is Rachel with you?”

“No, she said she’d be out running errands. Did you try calling her?”

“I did,” Brooke said. “She borrowed my car and said she’d have it back to me before five. “She’s fifteen minutes late, and I haven’t heard from her. I’ve been calling and texting since five but can’t get a response. I’m getting a little worried.”

He frowned. Shit. That wasn’t like Rachel at all. Worry coiled in his gut. “Do you know where she was going?”

Brooke sighed. “It’s supposed to be a surprise. For you and the rest of the club. I hate to break her trust and spill the beans.”

Fuck that. “Brooke, if something happened to her…”

“I know. I know. She had an appointment at that woodworking shop on Palm Pier Road. But the appointment was an hour ago and shouldn’t have taken too long. I’m not sure what she planned to do after that.”

“I know the place. Thanks. I’ll ride out there now. Can you let Curly know?”

“I will. Be careful, Frost. I’m sure I’m overreacting, but just in case, remember it was only ten days ago you were injured.”

“Will do, Brooke.” He ended the call and immediately tried Rachel’s cell.

“What’s wrong?” Jinx asked.

He held up a finger. Three rings, four, five.

Shit.

Ending the call, he glanced at Jinx. “Brooke is worried about Rach. She was supposed to return Brooke’s car about fifteen minutes ago and hasn’t shown up. She’s not answering her phone either.”

“You know where she was going?”

“Brooke had an idea.”

“Let’s roll. I’ll ride with you.”

“No, I got it.”

“Prospect, shut the fuck up. I said I’d ride with you, so I’m riding with you. Deal with it.”

After years of pushing people away and striking out on his own, his first instinct was to stick with his lone-wolf routine. But he’d be lying if he didn’t admit that having a brotherhood at his back felt damn good.

He and Rachel had that in common.

“Let’s go.”

They rode to the wood shop, flying way above the speed limit the whole ride there. Sure enough, Brooke’s SUV sat parked out front.

“That’s the car,” Jinx said as he pulled off his helmet. “Why don’t you check inside. I’ve learned to trust my gut over the years, and it’s screaming at me right now.”

“Yeah.” So was Frost’s. He jogged to the shop and pulled the door open.

“Hey, man, we’re actually closed.” A dude with a long ginger beard, tattoos galore, and sawdust covering his overalls stood behind a desk.

“Sorry, I’m just looking for my girlfriend. She had an appointment with you at four. Rachel.”

“Oh yeah, she was here. Left about forty-five minutes ago, though. Sorry, man.”

Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck.

“Her car is still out front.”

The guy frowned. “It is? She left. Could she have walked somewhere?”

“Maybe, I’ll poke around. Thanks for your time.”

“No problem. Hope everything’s okay.”

“I’m sure it is.” He wasn’t sure of anything. “You do amazing work.” Pictures of the woodworker’s creations hung all around the space.

“Thanks.”

Frost slipped back outside.

“She left forty-five minutes ago,” he said to Jinx.

“Well, fuck. Where the hell did she go?”

There were two other stores in the small strip, but both had closed and sat darkened.

“Bar across the street?” Jinx asked.
