“It didn’t feel right driving that car, Doc…”

Robert’s brow rose instantly, making Landon laugh as he tossed his napkin on the table. The man was too enticing and captured all Landon’s attention.

“I mean, Robert. You’ve done too much. I can’t drive that car. What if I wrecked it?”

“I have insurance. And it doesn’t look like you even stayed in the house. Have you been here the whole time?”

“Yeah, after that first few days in the hospital.” He looked down at their joined hands. Landon had both his covering Robert’s now. Content to stay sitting right there for however long he could. He turned Robert’s hand over, letting the pad of his thumb slide across the doc’s lightly calloused palm. His nerves flared briefly, allowing Robert’s touch and their natural connection to soothe him enough to answer honestly. “I’m used to making my own way. I’m a prideful guy. I don’t expect or want handouts. So, it’s weird being in this situation, taking you up on your offer, but it felt weirder not to accept your generosity. When I get to the clinic, I’ll get my housing situated. It’s not a thing. I appreciate what you’ve done for me.”

“Don’t go,” Robert said, placing his coffee cup on the counter in front of him. His grip on Landon’s hand tightened and he tugged him forward, close enough that Robert’s lips captured his in a sweet, chaste kiss.

“I can’t stay here and let you stay in a hotel. It’s just not right,” Landon said, trying to rear back.

“I could stay here too,” Robert said, his voice wispy and soft as he caressed Landon’s cheek with his palm then cupped his neck, keeping him close, forcing Landon to have this conversation eye to eye.

“Live togeth—” Landon started, but Robert cut him off.

“I’m not trying to make it weird. I just have the room and enjoy your company. Stay for a week, and we’ll talk again in seven days. I like the thought of you here more than I probably should at this point in our relation— Just stay.”

Landon stayed silent, hopefully masking his facial features from the freaking the fuck out he had tumbling around on the inside. Could Robert feel him trembling?

“I wasn’t trying to put you on the spot. Look, you can stay in your room. I’ll stay in mine. It doesn’t look like you used much of the house anyway. Just stay. If it’s too much or doesn’t work out, then you can call for a place to live.” Robert sounded so reasonable while painting a picture Landon’s heart yearned for more than anything ever before. This was dangerous ground, for both his soul and his heart. How deep would he be when Robert realized his mistake?

“I don’t know…” He needed space and tried to pull his hand free. Robert wasn’t having any of that. Robert’s lips pressed against his again. They were so fucking sweet. Landon’s heart flip-flopped as he had no choice but to return the kiss. He had to be crazy to even consider the arrangement. He’d never be able to keep his hands off the man.

“Give it a week. Give us the time we need to find out what this is.” Robert’s ocean-blue gaze held him in place. Could Robert hear his heart banging against his chest? His defenses were practically nonexistent. This man was too much. Robert Adams was everything Landon had always wanted but never imagined he could have.

He needed to find perspective in a huge way. “Let’s play it day by day.”

“I’ll take what I can get, but I’m sticking to a week.” The corner of Robert’s mouth kicked up in a satisfied smile. Robert was off the stool, taking his plate to the sink before the words sank in. Landon didn’t fucking know what had just happened or what to think. He was still trying to come to terms with what he’d just agreed too. But watching Robert at the sink made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside, especially knowing the man enjoyed his company. He also loved knowing he’d made Robert happy with his decision. He wanted Robert happy forever.

Landon rose, going to the sink. “Let me do this. You cooked.”

Robert bumped his hip, nudging him away from the sink. “Your cast can’t get wet. I got it. How have you been getting to the rehab center?”

“Public transportation, sometimes Uber, then I rented a car, because it just seemed easier,” he said, understanding the complications of the cast, but not ready to give up on helping with the cleanup.

“Where’s the rental? It’s not in the drive.”

“I parked on the road just in case you needed your car.”

Robert pressed a kiss to Landon’s lips as if it was the most natural thing in the world to do.

“Thank you for thinking of me. I have to go get my things from the hotel and stop by the store, but I’ll be home the rest of the day. Come back when you can.” Robert cocked his head toward the kitchen door, encouraging him that way. Landon let his hand travel the curve of Robert’s ass, giving him a gentle squeeze before he left the kitchen. Everything felt so in sync, so together.
