“Interesting,” Kai murmured, earning a groan from Dev.

“You said you wouldn’t laugh.”

“I’m not laughing!”

“Uh-huh.” The skepticism dripped from that sound.

“You may not believe this, but there haven’t been an extraordinary amount of lovers in my life, and very few of them have been assassins.”

“Well, I believe half of that statement.”

Kai arched a brow at Dev. “Did you just call me a whore?”

Dev’s cackles filled the car as Kai slowed for a stoplight. They were only a few minutes away from the condo now. Very soon he’d be able to haul that sexy man into his bed and take care of that poor ass of his.

“I didn’t mean it quite like that. Just that you’re sexy. You know you’re sexy. I’m sure you’ve had no problem finding partners. Probably beat them off with a stick.” Dev’s comments dwindled to what sounded like a jealous grumble.

“You realize, the only part I heard out of all of your ranting is that you find me sexy,” Kai teased. He eased the car into the intersection, turning left into a quieter subdivision.

Dev snorted. “You’re impossible. Also, you said that very few have been assassins, which means some of them have been.”

Of course Dev would catch that. Kai tried very hard not to squirm in his seat. Usually he was good at masking his feelings, but it was becoming harder around Dev. He found that he didn’t want to hide anything from him.

“Well, there’s one, but I struggle to call him a lover. It was just a one-time thing. A quick hookup. And I know he’d never hurt you.”

Dev turned in his seat to face Kai, practically bouncing. From the corner of Kai’s eye, he could see the open excitement on his face. “Wow. You’re actually blushing. I didn’t think that was even possible. Are you embarrassed? Now I’ve got to know. Tell me! No, wait! Is it Justin?”

There was no stopping the look of horror. “Justin? Oh, fuck no!”

Yes, Justin was an incredibly good-looking man. He had that kind of wholesome, American jock, sweet farm boy look. The problem was that Justin could never keep his mouth shut, and Kai spent more time wanting to strangle him than wanting to fuck him.

“Then…”

“Gabriel. It was Gabriel,” Kai softly admitted.

“Noooooo,” Dev replied.

So, this was what it felt like to gossip about exes. Not something Kai had ever thought he’d experience, but it was going much better than when Justin had found out. He’d kept threatening to shoot Kai.

“Like I said, it was a one-time thing, years before Gabriel met Justin. It meant nothing, and it is never happening again.”

“Does Justin know?”

Kai sighed loudly. “Yes, and he still threatens me over it on a regular basis even though we all know nothing is ever going to happen again.”

Dev settled back in his seat, a strange expression on his face. “I get it, though. He is hot.”

Kai hit the brakes a little harder than necessary at a stop sign, throwing them both forward a bit. He narrowed his eyes on Dev, who looked as though he was fighting back a smile. “No. I don’t want to know if you think he’s hot. He’s happily married, and you’re—” Kai stopped himself as he belatedly realized he’d gone all possessive caveman.

Dev chuckled and leaned over, stealing a kiss. “I’m yours, huh?” he whispered playfully against Kai’s damp lips.

“Yeah.” The word came out rough, as if it had gotten caught in his throat. Dev could weave a spell around him that he simply couldn’t escape.

“I’m just teasing you. We both have a past. If you can deal with the fact that I was married and loved another man before meeting you, I can deal with the idea that you might have had sex before meeting me.” Dev gently kissed him again and Kai melted into it. When it came to Devlin Relic, Kai was utterly helpless, and he loved every second of it.

They fell into a comfortable silence as Kai made the final couple of turns before pulling the rental car into a short driveway. The condo was designed to look like a colonial townhouse with pretty white shutters and a small porch. It was nearly eight in the evening, and the late afternoon sun had cast the world in a warm glow. He’d never given the place much thought. It was relatively close to the airport, purchased at a good price, and located in a decent neighborhood. For the most part, it was simply a place to sleep and sort things in between jobs.

As Kai turned off the engine, Dev unbuckled his seat belt and flashed him a wicked grin.

“Now I get a sneak peek into the personality and preferences of Kai,” he announced and shoved his door open.

Kai shook his head. Dev was going to be sorely disappointed. The furniture had been bought with an eye for functionality. There were no decorations. No pictures. Nothing to give away who Kai was. He didn’t keep anything personal. It was too dangerous.
