It was as if his brain had simply shut down to its barest functions and completely disconnected from his mouth. Why in the world would Dev want to kiss him in the first place? The idea of being desired by this man was simply beyond him.
To further shock him, Dev grabbed the bottom of his seat and scooted it closer to Kai, a hint of a smile playing on those perfect lips. When he got to the spot he wanted, he looked around and then back to Kai. “Is this okay? It doesn’t block your line of sight or anything?”
Damn. Now he had to kiss the man. How could he not when Dev was actively trying to take into consideration their safety and Kai’s ability to protect them both?
“You’re just perfect,” Kai murmured. He reached over and covered the hand Dev had resting on the table with his own, leaning a little toward him. His heart picked up, skipping happily in his chest when Dev leaned closer. The voice in his head was still arguing that this was a mistake, that he wasn’t worthy of someone as good and sweet as Dev, but he didn’t care.
Fine. He was a bad, bad man, and right now, he wanted to kiss Dev more than he wanted to ever be good again.
Devlin’s hot breath ghosted across his lips just before they lightly brushed. The sweetest tugging of flesh. Warm and moist. It was like being kissed by something divine. Kai’s eyes fell shut and he let himself get lost in Dev’s touch, handing all control over to the other man. He wanted to hand all of himself over to Devlin; he trusted him completely.
The kiss turned into a series of small, exploratory kisses that steadily grew hungrier and more heated. Dev’s teeth scraped across Kai’s bottom lip followed by a brush of his tongue. Okay, maybe he couldn’t stand to be passive any longer. He opened, welcoming Dev into his mouth. A moan was rising up his throat while blood was pooling in his groin.
Movement or maybe a noise invaded the moment, and Kai instinctively jerked away. He was nearly out of his seat, reaching for the knife on his belt when his eyes focused on the server standing in front of their table with a tray loaded with their food. The poor man flinched, but he managed to not spill their food.
“Forgive me,” Kai muttered, settling in his seat.
“No, my fault. I didn’t mean to startle you,” the server said, still looking shaken.
Dev laughed and grabbed Kai’s hand, squeezing it. “It was totally our fault. We were completely distracted. But now I’m distracted for a new reason. That smells amazing.”
With the awkwardness smoothed over, the server placed their food in front of them and darted away, seeming happy to be away from their table.
Kai chanced a glance over at Dev to find his companion watching him from the corner of his eyes, his lips trembling as if he were fighting laughter. Dev squeezed the hand he was holding once, then released it to pick up his fork. “You are very distracting.”
“I think the fault lies with you for the distraction. I guess we’re lucky our first kiss did not go so well.” Kai picked up his linen napkin and placed it across his lap.
“Really? Why?”
“I don’t think you would have slept alone in your bed last night.”
Dev audibly gulped, his eyes going wide, and Kai could only smirk. He didn’t seem averse to the idea, but now that they weren’t kissing, the voice in Kai’s mind was growing louder. He needed to be careful. Dev wasn’t going to be some quick hookup to blow off tension before he ran off on his next contract. Dev was worth far more than that.
“Also, I don’t want you to hesitate to talk about your husband when you are around me.” Kai kept his eyes on his steak as he cut into it. “I am interested in everything about you. Especially those things that make you happy.”
Dev’s smile grew brighter, and he even sat up a little straighter. While Kai wasn’t fond of the idea of anyone having a claim on Dev’s heart, he did recognize that Adam had made Dev happy. He had been a large part of the man’s life. There was no sweeping him aside simply because he was dead. Kai had to respect Adam and the happiness he’d given Dev while they were together.
“I know there’s a lot you can’t tell me about yourself for safety reasons and all that,” Dev started haltingly, “but I would like to learn more about you. Anything, really.”
Kai picked at his food, wracking his brain for a topic that wasn’t too dangerous—or worse, revolting. He didn’t want to risk scaring Dev off. Not that he seemed like he was all that skittish. If that was at all thanks to the influence of Justin and Gabriel, he was going to send the men bottles of fifty-year-old whisky.
