“I understand that, but what about this lunatic? He wants us in Washington. What will happen if we don’t go to Washington?”
“I fully expect him to follow us to San Francisco.” Dev’s mouth bobbed soundlessly for a moment. They were apparently going to California. Kai offered him a weak smile. “If this person is linked to who I must see, this matter will be cleared up prior to us leaving the city. If he is not, I don’t think he will be stupid enough to attack me or you while we’re in town.”
Well, that just opened an entirely new line of questions that Devlin was absolutely dying to dig into, but Kai didn’t give him the chance. He snatched up the keys and opened his door. Pausing only long enough to motion to Devlin to accompany him, Kai got out and waited for Devlin to join him.
Together, they entered the lobby of the hotel to find that it was little more than a nice sitting area with a mammoth fireplace and a check-in desk. A pair of men were behind the counter, chatting amicably, but they both instantly brightened when Kai approached the counter with only the slightest hint of a limp. Their eyes practically devoured the man. Even noticing Devlin felt like an afterthought as they quickly appraised him but with considerably less heat.
Yeah, he wasn’t tall, dark, and sexy. He looked like a thirtysomething dad. His haircut was a dad cut and maybe his clothes were on the plain side, but he wasn’t a total loss. The somewhat regular jogging helped to keep the excess pounds down, though he could do something about his middle, which seemed to be leaning more on the soft side of things.
This was a wake-up call that he hadn’t wanted but needed. Kai was sexy, dangerous, and single. There was no way in hell Kai was ever going to be interested in a single dad with a dad bod and the romance skills of a slug.
By the time Dev had picked up the last scraps of his ego from the lobby floor, Kai was half checked into a room. It was kind of interesting to watch him interact with people. There was a false warmth to him as he chatted with the two men, but it was stunning in that he never really answered their questions.
Kai commented that they were staying for one night only.
The blond man working the computer asked if they were heading home.
Kai smiled and simply said vacations are always too short.
The brunet with dark eyes ringed with thick eyelashes asked if they’d been to the lake.
Kai’s smile never wavered as he replied they’d been taking in the sights.
On and on it went as he signed for the room and accepted the single key. They’d been everywhere and nowhere. They’d been on vacation and not. Leaving tomorrow, but no idea where they were headed.
When they checked out the next day, they’d remember a sexy man and his quiet companion, but that was about it.
Outside, they paused to grab the overnight bags from the trunk of the sedan and then walked down to the room they’d been given on the first floor. Devlin bit his tongue, watching the change in Kai’s demeanor now that they were outside. Everything about him sizzled with tense energy. There was no question that he was on high alert, aware of every little movement around him.
At the room, Kai led the way inside.
And yes, for a brief flicker of a moment, Devlin hoped that they had been given a room with only one bed that they would just have to share.
Snort. Right. He had been watching way too many of those goofy romantic comedies again. That shit needed to stop.
Right in the center of the room, two double beds with snowy white comforters and pillows.
Overall, the room wasn’t much to look at. The walls were white. The carpet was a bland beige. The drapes were plain navy, but they at least looked thick over the large window, promising to block out light from the parking lot or early morning sunlight. That was assuming Kai hadn’t booked them out on a flight at dawn.
Devlin closed the door behind him and remained by it, watching as Kai meticulously checked over every inch of the room. Dev wasn’t entirely sure what the man was looking for. Cameras? Microphones and recording devices? Explosives?
Dev didn’t ask. He didn’t want to disturb Kai’s train of thought. This was about keeping them safe and ensuring that they could sleep soundly at night. This cautiousness had allowed him to stay alive this long and Dev wanted him to live much, much longer.
When Kai returned from checking the bathroom, his shoulders were significantly less tense, and his expression was a little sheepish, as if he were embarrassed that anyone would see his ritual.
