Georgie.

The first girl I ever truly wanted to kiss. The first girl I wanted to go further with. The first girl who made me feel like I was going crazy when she rejected me. The only difference was, I wasn’t sixteen anymore. I could have easily slept with Sara. Taken her in my office and fucked her brains out. But she wasn’t who I wanted. I wanted the one woman I couldn’t have. The one who was sleeping in my house. The one I had hurt and now couldn’t seem to get out my head.

There was a light knock on my office door, and I glanced up. My breath caught in my throat at the sight of Georgie standing in the doorway, her bag over her shoulder and her hair a mess with hay stuck in it.

“Who have you been rolling around with in the hay?” I asked.

She giggled, and it was music to my ears. “A very beautiful chestnut mare who allowed me to work in her stall with her earlier. It was the only place that was quiet.”

I smiled but couldn’t help wonder if she’d been in the barn when I had. “I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to clear you some office space, but I made you a make-shift desk right there if you want to use it. I’m not typically on the phone, and half the time I’m out on the ranch somewhere.”

“Thank you, I’ll remember that next time. It was peaceful in the stables, I have to say.”

“The horses tend to make me feel at peace. When Hunter was little, my mother used to find him out here asleep in his favorite horse’s stall. Even though the horse wasn’t there, Hunter said he liked the smell of it. She said I used to do the same thing. If I thought I could, I’d probably still sleep in one.”

Georgie crinkled her nose. “Well, I do like the smell of the hay, so if you kick me out of your house…”

Her voice trailed off as we both laughed.

“Did you get a lot of information today?” I asked.

She nodded. “I got to see a wonderful side of your father, and everything he does for charity, as well as for the town of Hamilton.”

I leaned back in my chair. “My father is pretty passionate about giving back. Has been for as long as I can remember.”

She gave me another nod. “He mentioned a charity rodeo coming up that will be held in the indoor arena at the community center he started. He said it’s to raise money for the mental health foundation he helped start in your mother’s name.”

“Dad does it every year. It’s a fun time, you should go.”

“I will, for sure. Avery Grace was telling me about the street dance afterwards. Apparently there’s a boy she likes, and she asked me to help her pick out a dress. We’re going shopping in a few days.”

“That’s nice of you, Georgie.”

She half shrugged. “I love shopping, so it’s no hardship for me.”

We stood there for a few moments before she cleared her throat. “My rental car came today.”

“Good. Is everything okay with it?”

“Oh, yeah, it’s fine. I was going to head into town and grab something to eat for an early dinner. Do you have any recommendations?”

“You in the mood for pizza?”

“I’m always in the mood for pizza,” Georgie said with a chuckle. “Do you want to join me? I mean, only if you’re free.”

A small part of me wanted to say no. A very small part of me. And for reasons I couldn’t name. But before I could listen to my head, my mouth went off.

“I’d love to. Are you ready to go now? I can drive.”

A brilliant smile spread across her face, and I had the strangest feeling I’d done the right thing by saying I’d join her for dinner.

“Since you know your way around, you can drive.”

I grabbed my cowboy hat and put it on. With a wink, I motioned for her to head on out. “After you, ma’am.”

Georgie dug her teeth into her lower lip and blushed. I had no idea what had made her flush, but I loved seeing the color on her cheeks. She stood there for a few moments, and when her eyes dropped to my mouth, I nearly bent down to kiss her. Before I could do anything, though, she turned and headed out of the barn and to my truck.

She put her computer bag in the back seat and climbed up into the passenger side. I shut the door and headed around the front. When I got in, she was looking something up on her phone.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“A place called Figaro’s Pizza.”

She typed something in, and I started to drive. We remained silent for a bit while she appeared to study the menu. “Yum, everything sounds so good. And it’s rated the best pizza in Hamilton.”
