My injuries from the attack made it impossible for me to carry another baby, and that’s something I’ve been struggling with ever since.
I look up at Tank and give him a beaming smile as the first bridesmaid commences her way down the aisle. Today is not a day to dwell on the horrors of our past, but to welcome more happiness and light into our lives.
One after another, the bridesmaids come down in those stunning dresses, and judging by the perkiness of MJ’s sister and the way she keeps eyeing Zac’s best friend, that dress will be on the bathroom floor at some point tonight. And when it is, you can bet your ass that dress will be mine.
The music changes and the crowd gets to their feet. “Are you ready for this, baby brother?” I murmur as we wait for MJ to make her appearance.
He turns to me with a smile that I’ve never quite seen before, and I read the answer in his eyes before the words get a chance to slip through his lips. “Yeah,” he says. “I’ve never been so ready.”
A vibration starts in my pocket, and my hand clenches down on Tank’s, my eyes widening with horror.
Shit. I forgot to turn off my phone.
Tank looks down at me in concern as I slide my free hand into my pocket and fish my phone out while discreetly stepping behind my brother so the massive crowd won’t notice. I go to send the call to voicemail when I glance down at the screen, my eyes widening once again.
“Holy shit,” I gasp, my heart kicking into gear.
“What?” Tank questions as he pretends to continue smiling and being the perfect groomsman.
Zac gets wind of our conversation and turns around to find me staring down at my phone, just watching it ring. “Are you shitting me right now? MJ is about to come down the aisle. Put your fucking phone away.”
“Too late, little brother,” I grin as MJ makes her appearance at the other end, looking absolutely stunning. My comment draws his attention away as he focuses on his beautiful bride, allowing me to focus on the phone call.
I cringe knowing this isn’t the best time, but I hit accept on the call anyway, all too aware that my brother will hold this over my head for the rest of our lives. Pulling Tank a step closer to Zac to hide me behind them, I hastily lift the phone to my ear. “Hello?” I whisper.
“Hi, there. Is this Sophie?” The woman on the other end says, sounding a little unsure, probably not able to hear me properly.
“Yes, this is her,” I answer as my brother turns around and gapes at me.
“For fucks sake,” he mutters before gesturing to Mom and Dad as if they can do something about me.
“Hi, Sophie. It’s Suzannah from the LA Adoption Agency. I’m just giving you a call to let you know your birth mother has just gone into labor.”
Oh, holy fuck. It’s happening.
“Seriously?” I shriek in excitement as my hand clenches down on Tank’s once again. Holy crap. I knew it would be soon, but I didn’t quite expect it would be today of all days.
Tank turns around and I look up at him with tears brimming in my eyes. “Yes, dear,” Suzannah continues, absolute joy in her tone. “It’s still very early and the process is coming along slowly, so you have a few hours before you need to be at the hospital. However, you should start making arrangements.”
“Okay, we will,” I smile as the tears really start streaming down my face. “Thank you, so much.”
I’m going to be a mommy. I’m going to be a mommy. Holy fuck, I’m really going to be a mommy.
“No problem. I’ll meet you at the hospital with the paperwork,” she tells me before ending the call.
“What is it?” Tank questions the second I pull the phone away from my ear.
“Lily’s gone into labor,” I tell him as I throw my arms around him. “We’re going to be parents.”
“Holy shit,” he says, his body going rigid. “Are you sure?”
Zac turns again with an angry scowl across his handsome face. “What the fuck is going on?” he demands as MJ makes it to his side. She takes his hand, and he looks back at her with an adoring smile. “You look amazing,” he tells her. She blushes slightly before zoning in on the fact that something is going on down this end of the aisle.
Tank ignores everyone in the room as his full attention is on me. “Shouldn’t we be going?” he questions with urgency.
“No, not yet,” I tell him. “We still have a few hours. We can make the end of the ceremony then catch a flight back home. We won’t miss it,” I promise him.
“What?” Zac demands. “You two aren’t going anywhere. I haven’t even said my vows yet.”
