“Ahh. I see. Well, you seem to be breathing all right now, Maeve. Let’s just check your oxygen levels.” The doctor put the monitor on her finger. “All right, they’re fine. It might have been a nightmare. Were you dreaming about the drowning?”

“I . . . I don’t know. I still can’t remember anything.”

“I would suggest is talking to a therapist. You’ve been through something traumatic. I believe we have some information to give you for one.”

“O-okay.” She didn’t think she’d call them, though. She didn’t have the best relationship with therapists.

The doctor eyed her skeptically, but didn’t say anything. “All right, the good news is that your MRI was clear which means you’re free to go home. Now, you can stay another night if you’d like with this latest development or you can go home now.”

“Now. I want to leave now.”

The doctor’s lips twitched. “Right. I’ll get the paperwork started and that information for you.”

She turned to Gray once the doctor left. “I’m free!”

Gray squeezed her hand. “You are, baby. Time to take you home.”

She bit her lip. “Home? To your home?”

“Yes, to my home.”

“Where exactly is that?”

He ran his hand over his face. “Shit. There’s a lot we need to talk about.”

“There really is.”

“I live with my boss. I have a suite of rooms in his house and it’s private. But if you don’t like that, we can look at something else. I have plenty of money. We just need somewhere secure.”

“Oh. I don’t really mind where we live. But I’d like to spend a little bit of time with my friends. I’ve barely seen them. Also, I really need to check on Abe.”

He frowned. “I don’t like you going back to the place where your stalker attacked you.”

“But is he likely to come back? Sampson said he’s increasing security. And you’ll be there. You won’t let anyone harm me.”

“Damn right, I won’t,” he said arrogantly. “All right, I’m going to call Sampson and ask about this security. If I decide it’s good enough, we’ll stay for one night. That’s all. Understand?”

“Yes.”

Close to two hours later, Gray drove them up to Jenner’s house. Whatever Sampson told him must have been enough to satisfy him that she’d be safe. There was a man standing guard at the gate leading to the driveway. She recognized him as one of Alejandro’s men. Alejandro must have sent him to guard her.

Great. How was she supposed to explain to Gray that one of her best friends was married to the leader of the biggest criminal syndicate in the country?

Sure, Gray had no qualms about beating up guys that were hurting her and he liked to threaten to kill people. A lot. But that didn’t mean he was ready to get involved with someone with criminal ties.

Crap.

The front door opened and Immy came flying down the steps. She was running so fast that she raced right in front of the car.

Gray slammed on the brakes, swearing. Immy’s mouth parted in shock, her face growing pale.

Someone else raced out of the house as Gray turned off the car and jumped out. Suddenly, Jenner was there, grabbing hold of Immy and running his hands over her.

And Immy’s face went from shock and fear to pleasure. Jenner drew her against him and hugged her tight.

Then he pulled her away from him and shook her as he started yelling.

Maeve undid her seatbelt, climbing out of the car with Squish held tight in her arms.

“ . . . what the hell were you thinking, Immy! You could have been run over!”

“I-I’m so sorry.” Immy wrung her hands together. Immy hated being yelled at. She’d had that so often growing up, and Jenner should know better. But Maeve got that he was past thinking clearly.

He’d been scared for her.

Maybe he did really care about her as more than a sister.

“I didn’t mean to. My feet got away from me.”

“She’s safe, Jenner,” Maeve said. “Stop yelling.”

“What? I’m not yelling. Am I?”

“Maeve, what are you doing?” Gray barked. He walked over and picked her up. “You’re not to walk around on your own.”

“The doctor never said anything about me not walking,” she reminded him.

“She said you’re to take it easy, though,” he countered. “Which means not overextending yourself.”

Well, she had said that. But Maeve was pretty certain that walking was not overextending herself.

“That doesn’t mean I can’t walk. It means no running or exercising excessively. And trust me, if I’m running, we’ve got bigger problems than my health. It means the zombies have attacked or killer robots or enraged hamsters.”

“Enraged hamsters?” Gray asked.

“Those things are evil.”

“Hamsters are not evil, Maeve,” Immy said. She was looking far better now and she’d stepped out of Jenner’s embrace.

“You saw that movie too. I had nightmares for weeks about evil hamsters.”

“Movie?” Gray asked.

“Some cartoon movie,” Jenner explained. “Maeve has an overactive imagination.”
