“I do know what sex is.”
Lord, could she just shut up now?
“Do you have a heating pad?” he asked suddenly. “Painkillers? You look quite pale, how heavy is it?”
She gaped at him.
Crap. This lie was going to dig her a deeper and deeper hole. How long did her periods usually last? Like five days? Five days without sex. Would he forget her? Move on?
And even if he didn’t, how would she explain when she actually got her period.
Dork.
Lying never works.
“I forgot to tell you something,” she blurted out.
Was she really going to explain that she’d lied about having her period because she hadn’t wanted to tell him the truth? That she thought she might be losing her mind.
Why didn’t you just say you were constipated?
Damn, that would have been a much better explanation.
Huh, you knew you were in trouble when using constipation was the better excuse.
Idiot.
“What is it?”
Nope. She couldn’t do it. “You look really handsome today.”
He just gave her a look, like he thought she was full of shit.
If only he knew.
“Come on, sit down at the table. I made you a sandwich. I’ll get you some painkillers. Where are they?”
“It’s fine. It’s not that bad. I took some when I was in the bathroom.” She was starting to feel worse and worse.
He grabbed a blanket, placing it over her lap, then settled the plate on her knee. He’d even got her a bottle of water.
Man, if she really had cramps, she’d be totally tearing up over his care. Nobody had ever looked after her while she had her period. Well, not since her first time. Then her friends had helped her through.
But this was very different.
He nodded to her. “Eat.”
“Thanks,” she whispered.
“You still look a bit pale. You get heavy periods?”
“I don’t think so . . . I don’t know. I’m tired too.”
“That why you were so jumpy out there? Or did it have to do with something else?”
She didn’t know why having her period would make her so jumpy, but maybe he meant because she was tired.
“I guess so. Sorry about that. I really wouldn’t have stabbed you.”
“Like I said, girl. You shouldn’t threaten something you wouldn’t follow through with. You ever stabbed anyone?
“Uh, no.”
“It’s a lot harder to do than you think.”
“You’ve stabbed someone?”
He grunted.
Okay, now she didn’t feel hungry anymore.
“Who? What exactly is it that you do?”
He looked amused. “You didn’t think to ask that before?”
“Well, I thought you managed The Edge.”
He shrugged. “I don’t manage it, but I do watch over it. I’m a bodyguard.”
“Oh, you had to stab someone to protect your boss?” His boss must be rich, maybe even famous.
“Yep.”
“Why didn’t you just shoot him?”
“It called for a knife.”
Huh. Okay. She didn’t quite understand but she guessed you had to be there. Probably better she wasn’t there.
“I don’t really like the sight of blood,” she muttered.
“But you were going to stab me?”
She sighed. “I told you. I wasn’t going to stab you. Just if you were a baddie.”
“A baddie?”
“Bad guy. Obviously if you were a bad guy going to grab me, I’d stab you.”
“Just like you stabbed those men the other night?” He crouched in front of her and reached for her feet. To her surprise, he started to draw off her boots. She wasn’t sure why, but she let him go for it.
“I didn’t stab them because I didn’t have my knife with me.”
He stared up at her in disbelief.
“I carry it around now,” she told him. “I just . . . I don’t really want to use it. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
He sighed, then shook his head. “Girl, you worry me.”
“I don’t mean to,” she whispered. She hated feeling like a burden.
He glanced down at her feet. “These socks have holes in them.”
She sighed. “I know, but they’re my favorite. Aren’t they awesome?” They went up to her knees, they were purple and pink striped with gold ribbon around the top tied in a bow. You could only wear them comfortably with loose pants.
He drew her pants up, staring at the ribbons. Then he slid the socks down off her feet.
“Hey, what you doing?”
“You can’t wear socks with holes in them. Your feet will freeze.”
“My feet were fine before you stripped them off,” she complained.
“Where are your other socks?”
She sighed. “I’ll get them.”
He was being awfully weird about her feet. He simply gave her a look and she pointed to her bedside drawers. “In there.”
She stared at the sandwich without enthusiasm. But she couldn’t be rude and not eat it. Not when he’d taken the time to make it.
She ate a bite before becoming aware that he was very quiet. Turning, she saw him standing there . . .
With her giant vibrator in his hand.
Oh. Fuck.
Okay, it wasn’t giant. It wasn’t any bigger than his dick. But when she’d bought it, it had seemed enormous. Although it didn’t look that way when he gripped it.
