When he had to kill Dahlia.

Christ. This better all work.

It was so fucking hard leaving his babies. Once this shit was over, he didn’t want to be away from them again.

Was he talking about retiring?

Fuck. Yes.

As he stepped out of the elevator, he realized something felt off. What was it? He glanced over to find something sitting on the small table set against the wall.

Okay, so where were they? He walked over to the table where his girl had set up a bowl to drop keys in. Why he’d need to do that when he could just leave them in his vehicles, he didn’t know.

But she’d been insistent, and he hadn’t wanted to let her down.

He never wanted to let either of them down.

His guardian had been right all those years ago. Having people you cared about meant you were always vulnerable.

But he’d never explained the advantages of having people in your corner. Having someone to care for and look after.

It made him feel a thousand feet tall.

There was a note on the table as well as a toy dart gun.

The predator has become the prey.

Pup is coming for you so you better run away.

One hit is a warning. Two, say your goodbyes.

Three is fatal and you’ve won the pretty prize.

She waits on the roof, to the victor she goes.

So off you go, Fox, careful of your toes.

Careful of his toes? That was odd. Were they just trying to rhyme?

A surge of excitement filled him, chasing away the worry and stress he’d been feeling.

Picking up the toy gun, he moved silently to the living room area and then did a forward roll into the room, landing behind the armchair. No fire. He took a moment to listen. It really was silent.

His Pup was doing well.

Three shots and the victor would be him.

Fun. Fun. Fun.

Crouching, he moved around the armchair.

Living room clear.

He had a feeling that his Pup would be in one of two places. But he checked the kitchen and dining room first, just in case. Unless he was moving around, which the Fox doubted because he couldn’t be silent enough that he wouldn’t hear him, he was certain that Brody would be down in the bedrooms.

Or in the playroom.

Moving to the stairs, he started going down them.

This was the tricky part. He headed toward the playroom, spotting the object on the floor at the last moment.

He stared down at the dark piece of clothing. Now, what would that be doing here?

Reaching out, he slowly picked up the T-shirt and saw the squeaky toy underneath. If he’d stepped on the T-shirt, it would have let Brody know exactly where he was.

Sneaky, but not sneaky enough. He stepped over it, taking one step before coming to an abrupt stop as he saw the fishing line spread across the passage, about an inch off the floor. It was attached to the walls on either side with what looked like thumb tacks.

He raised his eyebrows.

There was a small bell attached to the line.

Now things were getting interesting.

He stepped over the line and realized too late that he wasn’t paying enough attention to his surroundings. He glanced up, staring down the hallway to where someone had just stepped out of a room. He dove to the side too late.

Thwap!

The dart hit him in the shoulder.

“First blood is mine!” Brody crowed before racing off.

Why, that clever little brat.

The Fox grinned. He wouldn’t make the mistake of underestimating him again. He’d been too complacent, thinking that he was going to be vastly superior. Moving slowly along the hallway, he was sure that Brody had headed into the playroom. He saw another booby trap outside the door. Under another piece of clothing there was a whoopie cushion.

Picking it up, he headed back to hide in the alcove of a door. Then he set it off. Brody appeared in the hallway. And the Fox quickly shot him. Once when he appeared and again as he ran down the hallway with a whoop.

The second hit got him in the ass.

Such fun.

Brody raced down to the media room, barely able to contain his laughter. This was so exciting! His heart was racing. Normally, he wasn’t that interested in anything that involved running, but this appealed to his Middle. And it also appealed to his dick.

Seemed he liked being hunted.

This had actually been Autumn’s idea. And she’d helped him set everything up. Then she’d said she’d wait in the tree house upstairs. He’d been worried she would feel left out, but she’d told him that she wanted this for him.

That he and the Fox should play together.

And he knew that this sort of play would scare her at the moment.

He hid in the middle row of seats in the media room, pulling the small remote from his pocket.

He had to time this just right . . .
