“Brody! Come in here!”

She was lying on the couch with the TV on. They’d been moving Brody’s stuff all day, and she was worn out. Brody raced in as she sat up, staring at the screen.

“Are you . . . are you seeing what I’m seeing?” she asked.

He rubbed his eyes then sat next to her. “Arrested? For fraud?”

She studied the TV screen as though she thought the news report would suddenly change. Along the bottom of the screen were the words: Deputy Mayor arrested for fraud and tax evasion.

She couldn’t hear everything the reporter was saying through the buzzing in her ears. Something about his planned run for senate. And how he’d been arrested by the Feds today.

Along with his fiancée, the current Mayor’s daughter, Laura Freeson.

“How is this happening?” she asked as video of Brad, and then Laura being hauled out of their massive house by federal agents filled the screen. It had obviously been taken on someone’s phone, but they managed to capture the horror on Brad’s face and the rage on Laura’s.

She turned to Brody, who was now staring down at her.

“Do you think . . .”

“Pretty sure, yep.” Brody nodded.

“But how?”

“How does he do anything? The man would be terrifying if I didn’t know he would do whatever it took to keep us both safe.”

Yep. Terrifying.

And utterly amazing.

The Fox glanced back down at the video circling social media and news sites.

Ahh, the look on their faces was so satisfying.

While he’d never had a lot of respect for the justice system it seemed that this time, it had worked. Both Brad and Laura were going to jail for a long, long time.

His phone rang and his smile grew as he answered it.

“Hello, Bunny.”

“Daddy, did you do it?”

“Of course, I did.” He didn’t ask her what she was talking about. “Couldn’t have happened to a more rotten couple.”

“How did you do it?” Brody asked.

Ahh, they were on speaker together? Good. He felt a lot happier now that they were living in the same house.

“You said I couldn’t kill him. You didn’t say I couldn’t make his life utterly miserable.”

“All those things that have been going wrong for him . . . the fines, the break-ins, that was all you?” she asked.

“Yep, don’t forget the computer virus that Brody gave him. But none of it was enough. This, though . . . this is what he deserves. And it’s actually far more satisfying than killing him. Making him suffer public humiliation, loss of status, and jail time.”

“But did he actually do those things?” she asked.

“What? No. It would have been a whole lot easier for me if he had. I wouldn’t have had to get all of that documentation faked, then leak it to the Feds. Hmm, now that I have you, Brody, I won’t have to hire out for the things I can’t do. That’s an added bonus.”

“But . . . but . . . you can’t do that!” she protested.

“What? Use Brody? I won’t if he objects. I can be reasonable. I’ve been taught that consent is sexy.”

“She doesn’t mean that,” Brody told him.

“Well, I don’t want you using Brody for anything dangerous that might get him sent to jail.”

Hmm. She had a point.

“Hey, I wouldn’t get caught,” Brody protested.

“That’s not my point,” she said.

“No, Pup. Our girl is right. My job is to protect you, not put you at risk.”

“But I won’t be at risk!” Brody protested.

“I will not have it,” he said.

“I was talking about Brad!” Autumn shouted.

“Why would you want to talk about Brad?” he asked.

“Yeah, Brad’s an asshole,” Brody added.

Good. He was glad they were in agreement on that at least.

“I meant that you can’t plant evidence to get him falsely arrested,” she whispered.

“Why not? I just did. And I did a good job.” Like always.

“But Daddy . . . what if you get caught?”

She had an obsession with him getting caught.

“Baby girl, that’s not going to happen. I’m the best there is. Stop worrying.” There was another call coming through on his other phone. “I have to go. Be safe.”

He ended the call and picked up the other one. “Talk and be quick. If you’re boring, I’ll have to kill you.”

“This is the man they call the Fox?” The voice was distorted so he couldn’t tell if the person had an accent, but from the way they spoke he was betting English wasn’t their first language.

“It is. Like I said, be quick. I’m awfully fickle and very talented with a knife. Who are you and what do you want?”

“I believe you have been speaking with a colleague of ours, Mr. X.”

“Yep. He’s a real bore, though. Who are you?”

“You can call me Mr. A.”

Excitement filled him. Finally. Not very ingenious names, were they?

What? Like Fox?

A fox was wily and cunning. As well as being cute and endearing.
