And soon.
“Now we need to start planning the wedding,” Jack said, his voice snapping me out of my obsessive thoughts about Sasha. “The timeline should be a six month engagement while you plan the wedding, and two years of marriage before your hectic schedule becomes too much for Sasha and she leaves you and the baby.”
I frowned. “I can’t do that to her.”
“She had her chance, Alex. Don’t go soft on me now.”
“It’s not soft, Jack. It’s called being a decent human being. You know the hate she’ll get if she walks away from Dixie. It will devastate her.” Shit, not to mention how Dixie will feel. Sasha will be the only mother she’s ever known. “I need to think about that.” It was just another reason to have alone time with Sasha.
“Fine, you figure out the details, all I ask is that you run it by me first. My only concern is your career, Alex.” His dark gaze was serious and I knew he meant business.
“I know, but I’ve got the bandwidth to think about other things too.”
He gave a sharp nod. “Fine, moving on. Kayla Crumbley.”
My brows dipped in confusion. “Who?” I sat up straight, wondering what the hell my agent was up to now.
Jack flashed his car salesman smile and laughed. “She’s the hottest new wedding planner to the stars.”
“No.” I shook my head.
“You have someone else in mind?” Jack laughed at the annoyed look I gave him. “Didn’t think so. What’s wrong with Kayla, oh wait, don’t tell me she’s one of your conquests.”
“No, I don’t know her at all.” But an idea had started to spin in my head, and given Jack’s whirlwind timeline, I knew I had to be smart. Sasha was reluctant to get close to me, and given my obsessive need to have her, I was starting to understand her perspective. “But I was just thinking…”
“Never a good thing,” he mumbled under his breath, flashing a smile when I glared at him. “Out with it, Alex. Tell me of your grand plan,” he said mockingly.
“Sasha and I should plan the wedding. Together.” The more I played with it in my mind, the more certain I was that this was the way to go.
“What?” Jack shook his head. “You do remember that training starts in three days, right? You know, your actual job?” He shook his head some more and angrily tossed a pen on the desk between us. “What’s really going on?”
Everything. “Nothing,” I lied smoothly. “Okay, not nothing. You do know that I’m more than a pretty face, don’t you?”
He barked out a laugh as he relaxed against the expensive office chair. “Let’s hear the plan before we start talking like that.”
I smirked at him. “Okay, listen. Sasha and I will plan the wedding together and we’ll do it publicly.”
“Why in the hell would you do that? Oh hell, you like her don’t you?”
“Of course, I like her. She is a perfectly likeable woman,” I smiled sweetly. “But that’s not what this is about.” It was absolutely what it was about, but there was another part of the story. “If the world can see some of our love story play out, they won’t ask so many questions, like where have I been hiding her and how did we meet? We’ll give them enough good content that no one will dig into our relationship.”
Jack’s eyes sparkled. “I’m listening.”
I smiled as my confidence grew, spitting out the details as they came to me. “The press will get some good photos of the happy couple, satisfying their bloodlust for more. But there’s something else,” I added because I knew this was the part that would appeal to Jack the most.
He rolled his eyes. “Cut the dramatic shit, Witter.”
I laughed and leaned forward. “But the dramatic shit is the best part and when you hear this, you’ll agree.”
His gaze narrowed. “Fine. Out with it.”
“Having us plan the wedding together and publicly serves another purpose. It will let my sponsors see that I’m the guy they want me to be, they need me to be. Solid and stable, keeping my woman happy.”
A slow grin spread across Jack’s face and he nodded intensely. “Oh shit Alex, you are more than a pretty face.”
“I don’t hate hearing that.”
“Seriously,” Jack began. “This isn’t just perfect, we’ll probably get a few more endorsement deals. Maybe even get a few to pitch in on this wedding.” He was practically beaming with cartoon dollar signs in his eyes. “I like it. I like it a lot, but I also don’t trust it. I’ve known you for years Alex and I know when you’re up to something. Whatever it is, don’t let it screw up everything.”
I flashed my signature charming grin and shrugged. “I have no plans to screw anything up.” Maybe I had a bad case of having my cake and eating it too, but Sasha was the cake and I wanted it.
