One woman, who I only had a vague recollection of, even pulled me aside at the end of the night to say, “I’m so glad that you two have stopped pretending like you’re not together.”

I gaped at her in confusion. Had everyone thought that we were suited and just never told me?

Gavin went off to have a drink with Court sometime after that, and I found myself alone for the first time all evening. I’d sent Gavin after Robert earlier to smooth things over, but it felt like my turn. He’d been happily at Harmony’s side all night, and now, we were both alone. I strode over to where he sat in one of the near-empty booths.

“Hey, you,” I said, sliding into the seat across from him. “Warm.”

Robert’s gaze shifted quickly to me and back to the party beyond. “It is. Summer is officially here in the city.”

“How have you been? You and Harmony seem to fit together.”

His face split as he searched out his girlfriend, who was standing on the other side of the room with English and Lark. “We do. It’s a happy coincidence. Much like you and Gavin.”

“You’re not mad?”

He finally looked me fully in the face. “Of course I’m not mad. It was wrong of me to react the way I did when I first found out about you two. I’d always known how Gavin felt about you. I should have expected it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you know, he’s always been in love with you.”

I laughed.

He didn’t.

“Gavin didn’t love me back then. We were a fling, Robert. I assure you, it was nothing like that.”

Robert shot me a skeptical look. “You know, I asked him about you before you and I got together.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“Oh, yeah. He was into you. I knew before anyone. I asked if he was ever going to make a move or if I could.”

“He never made a move. So, you must have been off base.”

“Nah. He laughed it off and gave me his blessing. Said neither of you would ever settle down, but good luck to me.” Robert shook his head. “I should have taken him at face value. Since you never would settle down with me.”

I winced. “That had nothing to do with you.”

“I know. Trust me, by now, I know.” He shrugged and leaned back into his seat with a sigh. “You and Gavin are perfect for each other. So, if you’ve finally figured that out, I’m glad you’re both agreeing to settle down.”

Something like panic settled in my bones at those words. But I quickly laughed it off. Gavin hadn’t loved me then. He wouldn’t have told Robert to go for it if he’d been that into me. We were trying this out now, and I could admit that I was deeply enjoying what exactly being with Gavin King meant.

But that didn’t mean that pesky L-word had to get involved in all of this. I’d never said it to anyone. I couldn’t imagine Gavin saying it to anyone either.

Robert just grinned at me. “Truly, Whit, I’m glad you’re happy.”

“Thanks.” I stood, prepared to walk away from the conversation. Then, I closed my eyes, sighed, and turned back to him. “I am sorry about what happened before. I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“Thank you. It’s okay. We’re both past that now, but I appreciate it.”

I smiled down at him and then left with a huge weight lifting off my shoulders. I’d spent my whole life burning bridges. It was nice to know that I hadn’t completely fucked this one up. That we could all still interact after this.

Gavin wrapped his arms around me as soon as he found me. “What were you two getting up to?” If I didn’t know better, there might have been worry in his voice.

“Nothing,” I said, taking his hand and tugging him toward the exit. “Let’s get out of here.”

“Oh?”

I arched an eyebrow at him. “I believe we’re newly engaged, and that means we can leave anytime we’d like.”

He laughed and let me drag him away. We were in a car, heading toward our building soon enough, and then out onto the New York City streets again.

“Your place or mine?” I teased.

“Mine,” he growled, dragging my lips against his as he crushed me against the mirror in the elevator.

I fumbled for the buttons and pressed his floor as we made out while riding up to nearly the top of the building. He lifted me up, wrapping my legs around his waist as he carried me across the hall to his door. He inserted the key, twisted the knob, and let us inside.

Clothes were strewn all over the floor on the way to his bedroom. His hands were in my hair. His lips on my super-heated skin. Breathless, back-arching, toe-curling moments passed as he got me into the room. His cock was in my hand. I pumped him as he groaned against me. Our lips met, wet and desperate. The last couple of hours had risen our desire to a crescendo.
