Now, it was parked outside by the back of the garage under the same tarp. With the same sign only this time the tarp was held down with cement blocks so the wind didn’t blow it off. I often drove it around, so no one stopped me when I removed the tarp, got in and took off. Slowly.

I drove around the property for a little while with the windows rolled down. I waved at the few people I saw along the way. Everyone smiled and waved back, some calling out a greeting.

I knew I’d get in trouble, but when I saw no one was at the gate to the compound, I grinned and rolled through. The road to the club property was just a little one lane road, nestled in the hills around Pulaski County. Rarely was anyone on the road except motorcycles and usually only in the evenings as people filed into the Boneyard. Even the bar was a couple miles from the compound, so I had the road mostly to myself.

It wasn’t until I rounded the first sharp curve that I realized I was in trouble. I let off the gas and pushed the brake to slow before reaching the bend and, though the car slowed somewhat, it didn’t slow nearly enough. The pedal went all the way to the floor with very little resistance. It was only then I noticed a light on that had never lit up before.

I almost made the turn, but there was a small limb in the road. Normally, I’d just roll over it, but in my panic, I jerked the wheel and the car spun. I screamed as the vehicle made a complete turn before dropping off into a ditch and slamming into the rock wall beside it. My heart pounded as I sat there taking stock of the aftermath. The car hit on the driver’s side, but, thankfully, in the back. While my door was pinned and I was roughed up a bit, I didn’t take the brunt of the impact.

For long moments, I sat there, my hands on the wheel, not moving. Just trying to breathe. I was in so much trouble… The very last thing I wanted to do was call Chase. While I kind of enjoyed the spanking before, this was different. Nothing had happened to me or the car the club had so generously let me borrow the first time. Now, however. Yeah. It wasn’t the spanking I dreaded, but the look of disappointment on Chase’s face.

And what if the cops got here first? I had no idea if driving without a license violated my parole, but it couldn’t help my situation. Why hadn’t I thought of that before? Oh, God! I was in so much trouble!

Adrenaline kicked in and I climbed over the console to the passenger seat but couldn’t get the door open. The ditch was deep, the door pinned by the lip of the trench. I put the car in battery mode so I could roll down the window and climb out, barely remembering to grab the phone Chase had given me before I started running back down the road toward the clubhouse. Until I heard the roar of a motorcycle coming from that direction.

My first instinct was to hide. But if it was Chase coming after me, he’d be even more pissed if he had to hunt for me. Besides, I knew he’d worry if he came on that wreck -- or one of his brothers did and called him -- and I was nowhere to be found. So I stopped and waited. Sure enough, Chase and Deadeye came roaring up the road with two prospects trailing them. I thought it was Cliff and Daniel, but I couldn’t be sure.

I just stood there until Chase and Daniel pulled up beside me. Deadeye and Cliff kept on going to the car and immediately started assessing the damage.

Chase shut down his bike and stalked around it to me. At least that’s what it felt like. I took a step backward before I found my spine and planted my feet. I’d fucked up. I’d accept the consequences.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’ll pay for the damage to the car.”

Chase looked like I’d slapped him. “Couldn’t give a Goddamned fuck about the fuckin’ car, woman! Are you hurt?” He pulled me into his arms and held me tightly. I could feel his big body shuddering around me like he was terrified. This big, gruff biker. The man who had admitted to being an assassin. There’s no way I was reading this situation correctly. He was probably pissed as hell I’d disobeyed him. It had been a stupid move on my part, one I was prepared to pay for.

“I’m so sorry,” I said again, doing my best to keep the tears at bay. I’d take my punishment like an adult.
