Three Months Later

“I hope old age doesn’t turn me into a cranky asshole like you.” Jenson Sparks, one of my best players, glances over at me from the passenger seat and smirks. He can get away with the insult since we aren’t in the arena.

“I’m only four years older than you,” I remind the dickhead. We met on the college hockey team when I was a senior and he was a freshman menace. After I graduated, we kept in touch and maintained our close friendship. When we both ended up with the Silver Spoon Falls expansion team, things got complicated. We had to find a way to make it work with me being his team’s head coach. Since I wasn’t willing to give up my friendship with Jenson, we mutually decided that I’m his boss in the arena, but everywhere else, we’re equals.

“Four years makes a huge difference.” The asshole points at me. “You’re old and cranky.” Then he shrugs. “And I’m young and cheery.”

“You’re a goddamn menace,” I mutter with no heat whatsoever while flipping the fucker off.

“Don’t drive mad.” He reaches for the screen on my dashboard, and I smack his hand away before he’s able to fuck with the thermostat.

“Don’t touch it,” I growl, displaying how grouchy I can be, but the fucker doesn’t take the hint that I’m not in the mood for his teasing.

“Is it that time of the month?” Jenson doesn’t let up. Glancing over at him, I see concern written all over his face and realize he’s trying to pull me out of my funk with humor.

“Bite my ass.” I smile, even though the last thing I feel right now is humor.

“Sorry. I’m not into hairy asses, but we can try to find you someone who is. Maybe if you get your elderly dick wet, you’ll be in a better mood.” He laughs and I realize my friend has no idea what’s causing my sour mood. Three months, two days, and seven hours ago, my soulmate disappeared, taking my heart with her. I took her virginity, and she stole my goddamn heart.

I thought everything was fine after I spent the night making love to her. While she slept, I got up to take a quick shower, planning to run out and get coffee and donuts for us. But all my plans imploded when I emerged from the bathroom and found the room empty. Instead of spending the morning getting to know my soulmate, I spent it trying to find her, which was pretty much impossible since I didn’t even get her goddamn name.

I stayed in Houston for three extra days, hoping to find her, but my search was futile. I came home to Silver Spoon Falls heartbroken but determined to continue my search. I’ve spent the last three months hiring detective agency after detective agency. Four detective agencies and thousands of dollars later, I’m no closer to finding my goddamn soulmate and I’m getting more desperate by the day.

“Watch out.” Jensen’s roar brings my eyes back to the road, and I find the tiny car in front of me braking suddenly for a cat running across the road. I drag the wheel to the right, but I’m not fast enough and end up slamming into the back of the other vehicle.

“Fuck,” I mutter and look over at Jensen. “Are you okay?”

“Fine,” he assures me. “You didn’t hit it too hard.” We both hop out and I wince when I see what’s left of the little compact car’s rear end. I might not have hit it hard, but this fucking vehicle crumpled like paper. “I wonder if that piece of shit is even road legal,” my friend grumbles as I rush over to check on the driver.

When the door opens and the other driver steps out, relief cuts through me a second before my heart shudders to a stop in my chest. Fuck. While I’ve been searching the entire state for my soulmate, she’s been right under my nose in Silver Spoon Falls.

My eyes eat up her luscious curves evident below the light blue scrubs she’s wearing. Her gorgeous pouty lips open and close silently as she stares back at me. Relief at finding her flows through me a millisecond before fear pierces my soul when her gorgeous eyes snap closed, and she slumps forward in a dead faint. Thanks to my quick reflexes, I’m able to catch her before she hits the ground.

“Are you okay, Tigress?” I lift her against my chest and run my hand over her soft skin before pushing a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. Having her in my arms again after all this time should be wonderful, but worry for her is overshadowing everything else. Jensen rushes over and opens the back door of my SUV for me to set my precious cargo down across the backseat. I lean into the vehicle and slowly run my hands over her sweet body, looking for signs of injury, but can’t find any.
