“The more they had sex with each other, the more they changed.” I pointed to the air.

Fatou moved her view that way.

A new view of the Angels came. Their golden skin had shifted to pale white. Black stained their golden wings. Long nails grew from their fingers. Tails swung behind them.

Fatou grabbed my arm. “They look deadly.”

“That’s because they are.” I gave her a sad smile. “But, God still allowed them to stay. He requested that they live apart and not see each other.”

“And what did they do?”

“They plotted on ways to kill Him, organizing twelve Angels to join forces.”

“Can you kill God?”

“I doubt it very much.” I waved my hand.

The Angels materialized several feet above us.

“What did God do when he discovered their plot?”

“He knew they would plot before they did.” I flicked my hand. “He cast them out.”

The blue sky shifted to black. Lightning struck the sky. But, instead of fat drops of rain falling, Angels did. Their robes fluttered. Their wings were no longer gold. Now, all of the feathers were pitch black. And one by one, Lucifer, Lilith, and the twenty consorting Angels slammed into the earth. Stones and dirt sprayed around, showering some only a few feet from where they fell. Some dropped from the sky like fat raindrops and then buried themselves, silently making impact. A gust of wind came up and whipped up the ground around the first three, who were closest to us.

I shook my head. “They tried to fly back.”

The Angels jumped up into the air, batted their wings fast, and flew to the sky. Yet, once they got to a certain level, it was like they hit a glass ceiling that was impenetrable and unable to crack.

I looked at Fatou. “Basically, God blocked them.”

She blinked.

I waved my hands away.

The visual of a peaceful Eden returned.

Fatou let out an exasperated breath. “So. . .then the Angels decided to create beings to make him mad?”

“And then God created his own beings to counterattack.”

“Like Fairies?”

“Like Fairies.” I touched her chin. “God created you to protect this planet and all things that live on it. I think He decided that his Angels were flawed.”

“So, they don’t come down at all?”

“They do, but I was told that they have many restrictions.”

“How do you know all of this?”

“Because Lucifer and Lilith have fought these Angels at times, and during the battle, they’ve called their soldiers to help—demons.”

“And you were called?”

I nodded.

“So then. . .” She ran her fingers through her dreadlocks. “How were you made? Bitten or birthed?”

“Bitten.”

“By a powerful demon?”

“Much more powerful than a demon.”

“Who?”

“Lilith.”

Fatou edged back. “What?”

“I’m one of Lilith’s many bitten. Ferkos is too. We both have similar stories. She found us in our separate villages—boys that had just become men. Ones that were excited to have a breathtaking woman come on to us.”

“She didn’t have wings when she came to you?”

“It took the Angels time, but they learned how to cloak their wings. They have the power of illusions.”

“And that’s why Ferkos and you have that power?”

“Yes.”

“But do other demons who aren’t bitten by her have it?”

“No.”

Fatou studied me. “I knew you were a high level demon, but. . .”

“I was more impressed that you could put me to sleep.”

“It was short bouts. I had to keep injecting you with needles.”

“Still. That speaks to the power that you have. You’re royalty. Then, a vampire gave you his blood. I wonder how powerful his bloodline is.”

“I never knew.”

“Interesting.” I raised my eyebrows. “And how much does Adae know about you?”

“He knew about my fangs before I showed him.”

“Of course he did. What else did Adae know when he appeared regarding your husband’s debt?”

“He had his sorcerers searching for my daughter as soon as he stormed into my apartment.”

Something kept tugging at my mind. There was a lot off with Adae’s actions and even the vampire husband’s, but on a deeper level. There was something important that I was missing about Fatou and her daughter.

But unfortunately, we didn’t have time for me to unravel the mystery.

I flicked my hands.

The garden disappeared.

The hotel room surrounded us.

Sunlight peered through the window.

Fatou turned in that direction. “It’s time.”

“It is.” I watched her. “Let’s get the Boto Brothers and then get back your little girl.”

Chapter 12

The Boto Brothers

Azar

It was time to grab the Boto Brothers.

Fatou dragged out a heavy duffle bag full of sage rope. The sharp scent reminded me of church incense.

Sage was a powerful herb in our world and had long been used in rituals and protection spells. It was said that if a single female burned it in a cauldron on the night of a full moon, the smoke would show her the image of her future spouse.

Sage was also the one thing that could bind and slow down demons. Granted, it was not impossible to get out of, but the rope did make escape difficult.
