She had woken something deep inside him.

Something that had been sleeping.

He didn’t like it, but he couldn’t deny…

He wanted her.

“I already told you,” she started, her honey-smooth voice now husky, “turn off the lights and lock the door. I don’t need your help for that.”

“You’re right, you don’t. I’ll walk you out to your car, then.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll walk you out to your car,” he repeated more firmly.

“Fine, Officer Lennox, since you feel the need to protect and serve.” She jerked into motion, walking toward him.

What was she up to?

She kept coming straight at him, her hips rocking smoothly with each step she took.

Jesus Christ, she was sexy as fuck. All curves and smooth ebony skin. Her dark, observant eyes held a mischievous spark more often than not. Full, soft, kissable lips. Long legs made even longer due to the high heels she wore.

He held his breath as she stopped toe-to-toe with him, leaned in and raised a hand…

Then the lights went out and the room turned pitch black, all except for the slightest red glow from the lit exit sign above the door.

“See? I could do that all by myself.” Her words whispered over his lips.

Christ, she smelled good, too. Better than those damn chocolate chip cookies. “I’d give you a cookie for your effort, but they’re all gone.”

“Well, look at that,” she murmured, “your sense of humor does exist. It was just shoved all the way up your ass, along with that stick.” Her nails scraped lightly along his jawline, then her thumb swept across his bottom lip.

“Aaliyah…” He curled his fingers into his palms to avoid reaching for her.

“Hmm?”

“I can’t do this.”

“You already did.”

“I can’t do this,” he insisted again.

“Then don’t. The exit’s right there. However, it sounds like you’re trying to convince yourself more than me.”

She was right.

He swallowed in an attempt to loosen his tight throat. “You’re in the way.”

She took a step back, giving him enough space to get around her. “We can leave. I’m done here.”

For fuck’s sake. “I’m not.”

He reached for her and pulled her into him, digging his fingers into her hips to pin her against him.

“Nox—”

He smothered whatever she was about to say next when he slammed his mouth against hers. Those lost words became a moan, and she wrapped her arms around his back, embracing him tightly.

Christ, he didn’t realize how much he missed holding someone and getting held in return.

By an adult.

He appreciated and accepted every hug Valee Girl gave him, but it wasn’t the same. The hugs between a four-year-old he considered his niece and a mature woman he was attracted to was definitely nothing alike.

With Aaliyah’s breasts smashed against his chest and their lips locked together, their tongues played with each other.

She looked delicious, smelled delicious and tasted delicious, too.

She could quickly become an addiction.

An addiction he needed to avoid.

Fuck, he wanted this woman, but his head and his heart continued to war with each other. His head said, “Go for it. It’s time to move on.” His heart…

Ached.

It also told his brain he should feel guilty for finding pleasure in touching and kissing Aaliyah. For wanting more. For wanting her in all the ways two adults wanted each other.

Was this a turning point for him, or strictly a stumble?

Would his guilt compound later when he was alone? When he thought back on these kisses?

He could end this mistake right here and now.

He turned his head to break their kiss. But before he could put space between them, he couldn’t stop himself from turning back and taking her mouth one more time.

Fuck. Just what he was afraid of… she was addicting.

It was only a kiss.

It should mean nothing.

Simply a moment of weakness.

And that right there was a lie because the only thing saving him from taking it further was the fact they stood in a public building.

A fucking public building.

In a town where he still worked and had previously lived and knew just about everyone.

Fuck.

He pulled his head back enough to say, “I can’t do this.”

“Too late.”

When he took a step back to put some space between them, he bumped into the wall.

He couldn’t continue standing there in the dark because he was afraid they would end up doing a lot more than kissing in a room where anyone could walk in at any time.

“So… Do you want to talk about that?”

He shook his head and skirted around her, heading to the door and holding it open for her. “You got a key to lock up?”

“No. The night janitor will lock up once I text him.”

He frowned. “You said you lock up.”

“Yes, by texting him.”

He shook his head at her answer.

They stepped out into the hallway, and he shut the door behind them.

“Are you still going to walk me out?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Gripping her elbow, he steered her toward the building’s outer doors.
