“I thought you liked it rough, Fletch,” Crew answered.

Fletch turned in his chair enough so Nox couldn’t see him widening his eyes and tipping his head ever so slightly toward him. Luckily, Crew picked up on the unspoken message immediately. His gray eyes sliced to Nox and back to Fletch before nodding barely enough for Fletch to catch it.

“Hey, Hard Nox, you need to give me a chance to win back that sixty bucks from you,” Crew called out. “Let’s go.”

“Not interested in playing poker, Crew,” Nox said, pulling his cap even lower before draining the last of the beer in the bottle.

“You can come in and listen, then. I’ve got something to talk about with a few of you. An opportunity you might want to hear. Plus, if you’re interested, it might take your mind off…” Crew grimaced. “It’ll keep you busy.”

Nox surged to his feet and with an underhanded toss, the empty Corona bottle flew through the air and crash-landed in the large metal trash can nearby.

The back gate opened and Rez came through it. “What’s up, fuckers?” He glanced around. “Did I hear breaking glass?”

“Nox tossed his empty,” Fletch answered, tipping his head toward the garbage can.

Rez’s feet stopped moving and he took in the scene, his brow furrowing as he stared at Nox.

“You just get off shift?” Crew asked him.

Rez turned back to Crew, still standing in the doorway. “Yeah. You said to head straight over here.”

“That I did. I’ve got an opportunity for some of you.”

“Just some?” Rez asked with a cocked eyebrow.

“Yeah, I’ll explain once everyone gets inside. I don’t want to have to repeat myself.”

“Who else are you waiting for?” Fletch asked, now curious about this so-called opportunity.

“Nobody. Even though I can’t offer it to all of you, I would still like all the members to hear it.”

“If it has to do with a deserted island, a bunch of hot chicks in string bikinis and an endless supply of cold beer, I’m in,” Fletch told Crew.

Crew huffed out a laugh. “Yeah, right. If that opportunity came up, I wouldn’t be sharing it with you dickheads. None of you would ever see me again.”

“Promises, fucking promises!” Rez shouted, smacking Crew in the gut as he squeezed past him. “What a wet dream it would be not to have to deal with you anymore. Take the rest of your federal fucking buddies with you.”

“Tick tock, motherfuckers,” Crew warned Fletch and Nox before disappearing inside with Rez. The metal door slammed shut behind them.

“I’m interested in what he’s got for us. How about you?” Fletch asked Nox.

“Yeah, fuck it.” Nox headed toward the door. “Unless it’s painting his fucking house. We still have more to paint here first.”

“We’re in no rush to finish the second and third floor, brother. You’ve done more than enough work already.”

After purchasing the building last September and while the weather was decent, they worked on enclosing the outer stairs first and then all winter long they worked on the interior until they got the first floor just how they wanted it. Or close to it.

The lower level of the old building now looked like a real MC clubhouse. Only better. It was more like a serious man cave any guy—single or married—would be jealous of.

The way it looked now compared to the way it looked the first time they saw it was night and day. If the front hadn’t stayed the same—looking abandoned—no one would know it was the same building. However, they decided to follow Rez’s suggestion and left the front exactly how they found it. One of the house rules was that no one used the front entrance. It was kept locked up tight. They only came in or left through the back or side door.

Six-foot high, dark brown PVC privacy fencing now surrounded the parking lot along the side and back of the clubhouse and everyone drove to the back gate into the parking area from an alley at the rear of the building. Since the stairs outside had been completely enclosed—except for the opening at the base of the steps—it provided protection from the weather as well as from prying eyes.

The less people who saw them coming and going the better. Anyone driving by on the street out front wouldn’t think twice about the place being in use or occupied. Someone would have to stakeout the location to figure out what was going on inside the building. And if someone was staking out their club’s church, too many observant eyeballs would catch them.

Nobody was slipping by a bunch of badges who’d seen a thing or two in their careers.

Even though only a few changes had been made to the exterior, the first floor interior had been completely rehabbed.

Fletch locked the back door behind them and followed Nox down the hallway toward the common area. The men’s restroom to the left, as well as the women’s room on the right, had been completely cleaned up and restored. In addition to each bathroom having two sinks, the men’s had three urinals along with one shitter, while the women’s had three stalls.
