“Not having the van won’t stop them from selling drugs.” She groaned silently. Nothing like telling a trained cop and federal task force officer something he already knew.
“No, but burning that van along with their drug stash is guaranteed to piss them the fuck off. Now they’ll be extra cautious and may even be looking for revenge.”
“Did they call the fire department?”
“Hell no, because the fire department would’ve reported it to the police. And the fuck if the Demons want the cops and a fire marshal involved. Even in a case of arson.”
That was what she hoped when she threw her plan together.
She knew setting the van on fire wouldn’t be more than a hiccup to the outlaw MC’s operation. It wouldn’t stop them from selling drugs or continuing to run the club into the ground, but still…
Lighting that match had been extremely satisfying. She had even written the word karma with a marker on the pack of matches beforehand and that made the calculated risk all the sweeter.
“Mel,” he breathed, pulling her into him and holding her tight, “you could’ve gotten caught.”
Technically, she did. By the task force. But she understood his worry about one of the Demons catching her. “The girls kept Taint and the prospects busy for me.”
His high-pitched, “They were in on it, too?” made her realize she should’ve kept that little tidbit to herself.
Too late.
“Will I be charged with anything?”
A loud rush of air escaped him. Hopefully he was blowing out some of his annoyance with it.
“It was recorded.”
“I figured that. But will it be used against me?” she asked.
“Only if forensics has a reason to spend the time and money to repair the corrupted video footage.”
She glanced up and met his eyes. Her heart swelled at the lengths he went to protect her.
“I hope you can bake like a freaking fiend because you owe everyone on the task force a shit ton of cookies, at least a dozen pies and a truckload of beer.”
At that news, she relaxed a little. Unless someone snitched, she wouldn’t be feeling the cold bite of handcuffs on her wrists any time soon. “I know a good bakery and a beer distributor.”
He pressed his cheek to her temple and murmured, “Jesus, Mel, that was dangerous and just plain dumb.”
Was he expecting her to disagree? “Of course it was.”
“If you don’t want to put me in an early grave, stay the fuck away from both the Demons and any security cameras I have access to.” He leaned back slightly to stare down into her face. “Do you feel better now you got some revenge?”
She countered with, “Do you?”
His head snapped up and he stiffened against her. And not in the way she preferred him to be stiff. “What does that mean?”
She raised both eyebrows. Was he going to play dumb? “Sapphire told me Saint got the shit beat out of him.”
Finn, his face a careful mask, huffed, “A damn shame.”
“Do you know anything about it?” When he didn’t answer, she asked point blank, “Was it you?”
“And if it was?”
Of course it was. The day Taint was released from jail, Finn came home with a few busted knuckles. When she asked him about it that night, he mumbled something about how he was helping Nox with the framework in his apartment.
At the time she didn’t think much of it. After finding out about Taint’s injuries around the same timeframe, she put two and two together.
“You could’ve lost your job,” she reminded him. If he did, they’d both be unemployed.
Instead of renewing his condo lease, he moved in with her so he could help her out financially. At least until she found a new place of employment or a way to open her own club. She was actively working on both by scouring online job listings and also building a solid business plan.
“And you could’ve lost your life, Mel. I only recently found you, I don’t want to lose you.”
That declaration made her eyes sting. She gave him a shaky smile. “I don’t want to lose you, either. Maybe we both need to stop doing stupid shit. Agreed?”
“Agreed.”
“Now, I’m going to make dinner and after we’re done eating, we can spend a nice, quiet evening together watching a movie. No fires. No fights. No MCs or security cams.”
“I could use some quiet. I’ll take the dogs out.”
She grabbed his arm, stopping him. “Hold on. There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
He groaned. “Should I be scared?”
She rolled her lips under. “With this? Possibly. But my best guess is, you’ll survive.”
“What is it?”
“On my way home, I realized something…”
He groaned again and pressed a palm to his chest.
“Look, if you want to be overly dramatic, I can tell you another time.” She began to head toward the kitchen.
This time Finn grabbed her arm to stop her. He swung her back around to face him. “What is it?”
