He studied her face carefully when he asked, “How’d it go?” because he had a feeling she was going to downplay any problems she had. She was determined to prove herself to him and that stubbornness could make the whole situation even more dangerous.

“It went as expected when you have a bunch of bikers drinking and partying.” She lifted a finger. “I have something for you.”

She dug into the V-neck of her top and for a brief second he thought she was about to pull out a tit right there in the parking lot. He was relieved when she pulled out a baggy from her bra, instead, and held it out to him.

Proof of how lack of sleep affected him. It made him stupid.

“Looks like a gram. Did they charge you eighty again?”

She shook her head. “No. Believe it or not, it was payment for a job well done.”

She must have been making friends and influencing people last night.

It was good that the Demon in charge of the bar liked her. That could be beneficial to the investigation. The reason she was working at Hawg Wild in the first place, he reminded himself.

He took it from her and bounced the baggy in his palm. “I’ll take it upstairs to weigh and document it if you want to go home and sleep.”

“A shower and catching some shut-eye would be great about now.”

He nodded even though he wasn’t ready for them to part ways.

Not yet.

The next question out of his mouth surprised the hell out of them both. “What about breakfast?”

She tipped her head to the side and stared at him for far too long before she responded with, “I could use some of that, too. You buying?”

He took a deep inhale of the cool morning air. “I am.”

“That sounds tempting. Unfortunately, I need to go home and let Murphy out.”

“Already done.” She had no idea just how close he lived to Fletch. Right now, he’d keep that to himself.

Her eyebrows jammed together. “What?”

“Now, aren’t you glad I still have a key?”

“Debatable.”

“You’re welcome for me thinking ahead and letting out your pony. He takes a damn big shit, by the way.”

“Did you pick it up?”

“Hell no, I left that for you. So… I know of a twenty-four-hour diner not far from here.”

She smirked. “I’ll follow you.”

He smothered his own smirk. “Give me a few while I run your latest score upstairs and secure it.”

“I’ll take the short stack, sausage links, scrambled eggs and coffee, please,” Crew ordered, handing the menu to the waitress.

The server twisted toward Cabrera. “Your dad has quite the appetite this morning. And what will you have?”

Your dad? Jesus fucking Christ.

Cabrera turned wide eyes to him and bit her bottom lip. Most likely to keep from bursting out in laughter.

Before she could give her order, he said, “She’ll have apple juice, served in a sippy cup, please, and an order of French toast sticks. You know the ones she can use her fingers to eat and dip in syrup. She’s still learning to use utensils. And don’t forget the bib.”

“Thanks, Daddy, but I’m old enough to order for myself.” She smiled up at the waitress. “I’ll take the steak, medium rare, and two dippy eggs. Water and a small OJ. Please and thank you.”

The waitress nodded and gathered the menus. “I’ll grab your drinks and be right back.”

As soon as the server disappeared, Crew returned his attention to the woman opposite the booth from him. “No coffee?”

“No. I want to sleep after this. I need to sleep after this. Especially since I’ll be pulling an all-nighter again tonight.”

“Do you feel safe enough there to go back?”

“You’re just looking for a reason to pull me. I promised to let you know if I don’t feel safe enough to continue.”

But by then, it might be too late. It didn’t take long for shit to go sideways when it came to outlaw bikers.

When the waitress came back with the coffee and water, he studied Cabrera’s profile as she chatted with the woman. He had no idea what they discussed since he was once again distracted by the woman’s natural beauty, still visible despite the heavy makeup she’d worn to work at Hawg Wild.

When her rich brown eyes turned back to him, he grabbed his cup of coffee and took a sip. It was strong and hot. Just how he liked his women…

Coffee. Damn it.

“Are we just going to ignore the elephant in the room?”

The elephant? Ah, fuck… “Yes.”

She grinned. “I find it funny.”

“I don’t.”

“Maybe you need to dig deep and find your sense of humor.”

“I have a sense of humor. I just don’t find someone thinking that the woman I,” he leaned closer and whispered, “fucked is my damn daughter. That’s disturbing.”

“You could’ve just told her I work under you… literally.” She rolled her lips under. Despite that, she couldn’t hide her amusement since the crinkles at the corners of her eyes gave her away.
