She turned and called out, “Hey,” causing him to stop securing the strap on his helmet and glance her way. “I heard you talking to Torres. If you aren’t aware, your voice carries even when you’re whispering. Despite what you think, I didn’t get my job because of my father.”

“You didn’t, huh?” His disbelief was clear both on his face and in his tone.

“No. I earned my spot. I didn’t squeak by in the academy, I was at the top of my class.”

“I never said you weren’t capable. But how did you snag that spot in the academy?”

“It could have had something to do with my 4.0 GPA from Northeastern University, my B.S. in criminal justice, being bilingual and my time in the Navy.”

He stared at her with his lips slightly parted.

Had she rendered him speechless? Good.

“So yeah, my father didn’t have to pull any strings. Not even a tiny one. I pulled those fuckers all on my own.” She climbed into her car and slammed the door shut.

Before her satisfied smile grew too big, she started her car and backed out of the driveway, leaving him still standing next to his bike with his hands on his hips and watching her drive away.

Chapter Five

Crew’s eyes scanned the third floor as he stepped through the door. Cabrera was sitting in her spot reading through the endless daily reports. Her eyelids drooped heavily and her head was beginning to nod while a forgotten mug of coffee sat next to the computer.

She sat up straighter as soon as she saw him and quickly clicked on the mouse to look busy.

He shouldn’t torture her by making her read through them all. But until he found her something to do, he’d let it continue and not feel bad about it.

Finn sat watching some of the live camera feeds on one monitor, as well as keeping an eye on recorded footage on another.

Torres, Proctor and Kruger, as well as Mullins, sat at computers working on either transcribing wiretaps, writing up reports or doing research.

Crew called out, “Finn, head downstairs.”

Finn’s eyes locked with his as he stood, giving him a chin lift.

“Where’s Nox?” he asked his BAMC brother next.

Finn answered, “He headed down to his apartment about twenty minutes ago.”

Crew nodded. “Okay, good. Torres, you’re in charge.”

“I’m leaving in about thirty. My oldest has a soccer game.”

“Don’t get thrown off the field this time.”

Torres laughed. “Some kid tripped mine on purpose.”

“It’s a game,” Crew reminded him.

“The little shit cheated,” Torres exclaimed.

“Yeah? Letting your boy deal with it himself will prepare him for real life.”

“Yeah, but as a father yourself, you know you want to protect them as long as possible.”

“I let mine fight their own battles.”

Finn snorted as he reached the door. “Sure you do. How many times were you banned from Dylan’s baseball games?”

“Just once.”

Finn coughed out a, “Bullshit.” His smirk quickly disintegrated. “Meet you down there.”

“Heading down now. I want to give Cabrera a quick tour before we do our thing.”

“Is that the thing you guys have been talking about?” Mullins asked.

“Yeah.”

“About time,” Torres answered. “Every day I come in here, I keep expecting to hear bad news.”

“Don’t say that shit,” Proctor growled. “I’ve been fucking worried about the guy.”

“We all have,” Crew assured him. “Let’s just hope this helps.”

“And if it doesn’t?” Kruger asked.

“I don’t know. None of us can force him to do anything. We can only talk, hope he listens and takes our concerns to heart.” Though, both him and Jamison had something up their sleeves to try to get Nox to cooperate. Hopefully it didn’t blow up in their faces.

“That sucks, dude,” Mullins murmured. “Good luck with that.”

“Yeah, thanks. We’re going to need it.” Crew turned and called out, “Cabrera. You’re done for the day. Come with me.”

She twisted in her chair, with her eyebrows pinched together. “Come with you where?”

“Downstairs. Will give you a little tour before you leave.”

“Let me log out.” When she finished shutting down the work station, she stood.

His gaze slid over her from the top of her head to her toes. Her hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail, and she forewent the suit today. Instead, she wore dark gray cargo pants that emphasized the slight curve of her hips and a white button-down shirt with enough buttons undone to show a hint of cleavage. Her feet were covered with a pair of black, low-heeled boots.

“Did I pass that test?”

He lifted his eyes to her face to see a slight curve to her lips and a gleam in her eyes. “What test?”

“The test to see if I listened to you about dressing more casually.”

“Yeah, you passed.”

She slapped a hand to her chest, raising her eyes to the ceiling and mouthed, “Thank God.” That emphasized her tits and the fact that her bra wasn’t padded enough to hide her nipples standing at attention.
