“Will you do me the biggest honor in the world, and be my wife?” Jay asks.
“Say yes, Mom,” Carter says. “I mean it.”
I laugh, falling into Jay’s arms. He holds me tight as the boys chatter away beside us.
I’m reminded, unfortunately, of what he said about Melody. She left him because he wouldn’t marry her. A streak of panic rips through me, and I squeeze my eyes shut.
“You don’t feel pressured into this, do you?” I whisper into his ear. “Because this—”
He pulls back and looks me in the eye. “We’re already together forever. This shows you, and the boys, that I’m not going anywhere. Ever. And that’s important to me.”
“Did you say yes, Mom?” Carter asks.
I step away and give Jay my hand. “Yes, Jay Stetson. I will marry you.”
“Yay!” Carter shouts, jumping up and down.
Dylan pats Jay on the shoulder as he stands up.
“Now let’s go eat dinner,” Carter says. “I’m so hungry.”
Jay slips the ring on my finger and kisses me.
“I can’t believe you did this,” I say, taking in the beautiful ring. “I . . . I’m so damn happy, Jay.”
“There’s no way you’re any happier than me, Gabrielle.”
“Hey, Mom!” Carter says from halfway across the yard. “How long do marriages last?”
I look up at Jay and laugh.
“A long time,” Dylan says. “Leave them alone. Let them have a moment, Carter.”
“But how long is a long time?” Carter asks.
“We will be married our whole lives,” Jay says, squeezing my hand. “Between now and forever.”
