The end of everything.
I turn and waltz off, my emotions blazing through me like a tornado blasting through a house, trying to find a way out. But there’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide from the debilitating sadness that overwhelms my heart as I sink to the ground behind the clinic and weep against the walls, burying my head in my hands.
He’s gone.
She said it herself.
He lost so much blood … how could anyone survive?
I cry into my hands, not giving a crap that everyone can see them. All I want is one last chance. One last chance to make things right with the boy who deserved all the freedom in the world.
But I can’t.
And I didn’t even know his name.
“Look what we have here … A little runaway girl …” someone says. “Aurora.”
When I lift my head at the sound of my name, my pupils instantly dilate.
It’s one of Lex’s guards.
“Gotcha.”
CHAPTER 6
Aurora
I shriek and punch all around me, but the guard quickly has my wrists behind my back. I struggle against him as he pushes me into his body, groping me.
“Not so smart now, huh?” he growls into my ear. “You’re coming with me.”
“No, let go of me!” I yell, kicking and screaming.
“Dave!” another guard in the back screams.
“Here!” he replies. “I’ve got her!”
“Take your hands off me!” I shriek as he attempts to bind my wrists with a zip tie.
“Shut up,” he growls, trying to stuff something inside my mouth, but I bite his fingers instead.
He groans in pain, blood rolling down his fingers as he tears them away. The metallic taste is disgusting, and I spit it out instantly. Can’t believe Beast did this on a regular basis.
Dave spins me around on my feet. “You bitch, you bit me!” he roars and slaps me.
“Put her in the van,” the other guard says.
When I finally see straight again, I fight against him as he drags me back through the alley. “No, no, no!” I say.
Not the van. Not the van!
“Stop resisting,” Dave barks. “It won’t get any better for you, trust me.”
It won’t, but I’m already at rock bottom. I have nothing left to lose except my freedom.
The freedom Beast fought so hard to grant me.
I can’t go down without a fight.
So I kick and scream as loud and as hard as I can, just as he would’ve done if he was still here.
Somehow, someway, I manage to knee him in the balls.
He groans in pain and releases me as he bends over to heave.
I run out of the alley and into the streets, shoving one of the guards aside when he tries to tackle me. I run back inside the clinic, gazing around at the employees, begging them with my eyes to help.
“Hide me,” I say, but the woman at the front desk just looks at me like she’s seen a ghost.
For a moment, I stare.
Then I run into the hallway to the right with guards on my tail. I go up a flight of stairs and another one, higher and higher, until there are no more stairs. I enter a thick, metal door, and behind it is a long hallway with only one door.
When I look over my shoulder, I can already see them running up the stairs.
No more time. Go.
I run into the only room there and gasp in shock at the sight of all the blood on the bed.
“Wha …”
“Wait! You’re not supposed to go in there!” Employees yell behind me.
I quickly slam the door shut and lock it before they get inside.
Someone smashes their fists on the door, and I back away. “It’s not sanitized yet! Get out of there!”
I take a few more steps back and look around for a weapon. I don’t want to use it against these employees, but if they won’t help me … if I have to … I will.
I grab the nearest IV pole and rid it of all the bags, then hold it out in front of me, prepared to fight like hell. Just like I told him and like he showed me.
Fight, Aurora. Fight!
“C’mon, girl, get ou—Hey! Don’t push me!” a lady yelps.
More punches on the door ensue. Much louder too.
“Aurora!” My eyes widen. It’s the guard. “I know you’re in there. Come out. There’s nowhere to run.”
I turn around and look for another exit, but there is none. Only a window.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
What am I going to do?
I step farther back and look out the window. It’s way too high to jump out of, and I don’t see anything to help me get down.
Are you insane? You’ll never make it down alive.
Oh God, what do I do?
More punching on the door makes sweat roll down my back.
Until it all suddenly stops.
And the only thing I can hear is my own heartbeat, banging rhythmically against my ribs.
