My eyes flicker to her Kindle, and I pick it up and begin reading out loud.

“I love it when you’re a greedy whore, sugar lips. Your cunt is so tight and wet and tastes so fucking good. Your body just aches for my cock.” I gasp, laughing. “River! What the hell is this book you’re reading?”

She begins laughing as a hint of blush hits her cheeks, and I continue because I love hearing the sound of her laugh.

“He rubs his thumb down my pussy and back up again before circling my rosebud between his fingers. He knows it drives me wild, and he won’t stop until he feels me come once again.” I cough, needing to breathe a moment. “Woman. This is some kinky shit. But I kinda like it.”

I take a deep breath, and as I get ready to continue, she stops me.

“Okay, okay. Don’t read that anymore. It’s not appropriate for the little one. But every time you talk, I feel movement. I think he or she likes the sound of your voice. It’s good for the baby to hear you talk because then he or she will recognize it after their born.”

I grab her hand in mine and squeeze. “I can start reading your books to you every night if you want me to.”

“Oh my gosh, no. But then again, it did sound pretty sexy in that accent of yours. Especially when you say ‘sweetheart’.”

“What was that, sweetheart?” I lick my lips, wanting, no—needing to taste her.

“Oh, there it is again!” She presses my hand harder on her stomach.

“I can’t feel anything yet. But wow. Just knowing there’s a life growing inside you right now is making me feel… I can’t explain it. It’s indescribable. Grateful? Excited? Whatever it is, I’m just so fucking happy I get to experience it with you.”

Her green eyes meet mine as we share this special moment together.

We’re going to be parents, and every single day it becomes more real.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

RIVER

As Alex and I walk outside hand in hand, I inhale the fresh, crisp air while it’s still breathable in the morning. Early May temps in Texas feel like August in Wisconsin. Hot as hell. And it’s only going to get worse.

It’s been over two months since I moved, and although there have been many perks to being here during the Wisconsin winters, I’m starting to think I won’t survive the Texas summers. My body isn’t used to this heat so early in the year, and I’ve debated stuffing bags of frozen peas in my shirt and shorts.

“Are you excited?” I’m nearly bouncing to the truck. “I can’t wait for you to see the baby on the 3D ultrasound.”

“Explain to me what that means again?” He opens the door for me and helps me inside. Now that I’m over six months pregnant, and my growing belly is much more noticeable, Alex has definitely been extra protective. A quality I definitely like in him.

Once he rounds the front of the truck and hops inside, I explain. “Well, it provides three-dimensional views of the baby, and you can see all their little features in great detail. A regular ultrasound you can see the outline and sometimes the small facial features, but with a 3D ultrasound, it’s like seeing the baby right in front of you. It also provides better analysis of the assessment.”

“Oh, I think I’ve seen one of those before. Makes the baby look like an alien,” he cracks, starting the engine. Immediately, I crank on the air because being pregnant is a self-heating oven as it is.

“It does not.” I slap his shoulder and scowl.

He looks over at me and winks. “I’m just kiddin’, babe.” He shifts his baseball cap around and leans over the center console for a kiss. “It’ll be the cutest alien baby there ever was.”

“Stop it.” I crack up laughing at his cuteness but lean in for a kiss anyway.

“So, are we going to find out the sex? Everyone keeps asking me, and I just keep saying it’s a boy.”

“You’re telling people it’s a boy?” I chuckle. “What if it’s a girl?”

He shrugs, keeping one hand on the steering wheel while he holds my hand in the other. This is as much as we touch, but my body begs for more. I keep holding back, trying to remind myself that we can’t rush this like we did the first time. Even though he’s been a complete gentleman, it’s getting harder and harder to deny the fact that I need him.

I want to strip off his clothes and ride him like a mechanical bull.

Oh God. Now I’m starting to sound like Natalie.

“If it’s a girl, I guess she’ll be wearing a lot of blue,” he teases.

“No way. Pink and purple.”

He snorts. “Yeah.”

“Then I guess we better settle it today and find out.”
