Flashing him his most devilish smirk, Alexei nodded. “Dinner sounds wonderful. Shall we meet here at six?”

“An early dinner?”

“An early dinner means more time we can spend in your hotel room.”

Soren nodded. “Six it is.” He picked up his package from the cheese shop as he rose from the chair, and continued down the street. Alexei breathed a small sigh of relief when the man turned the corner and disappeared from sight. He didn’t know if he’d lost his mind or if he was simply smart enough to take advantage of a unique opportunity.

He lingered another thirty minutes at the café, checking his email and flipping through social media posts. Afterward, he took the long route to his apartment, double-checking regularly that he wasn’t being followed. There were no hints of Soren or anyone else who might have taken an interest in him since the hit on Gabor.

The rest of the day passed far too slowly for his liking. He tried to argue that he was simply bored and ready for his next job, but a darker little voice inside of his brain was whispering that he was actually looking forward to dinner with Soren. Handsome face, sexy smile, and a brain in his head. It was a dangerous combination.

It proved to be an even bigger shock when dinner went more smoothly than he’d anticipated. Soren didn’t ask any of the usual questions about what he did for a living, who his people were, or even what he was doing in Paris, seemingly alone. They chatted about a number of topics, ranging from serious to the frivolous, but nothing that felt overly personal. Alexei hated to admit it, but it was easily the most genuine conversation he’d had in far too long.

Three hours passed in the blink of an eye at the restaurant, and Alexei honestly couldn’t decide if he was disappointed that this part of their evening was ending or excited that he was getting the chance to have sex with Soren yet again. Not that he didn’t know what was coming. He’d already fucked the man once. It wasn’t like it could get better.

He was wrong.

It was so much better the second time around.

So. Fucking. Good.

Chapter 4

Soren smiled at Angel’s relaxed expression. He’d dozed off after their impressive marathon. Not that he could blame him. It was after three in the morning. He should have been asleep, but he knew if he closed his eyes, Angel would be gone when he opened them again.

His brain was still screaming that the entire dinner date and repeat sexual encounter was a mistake. When he’d spotted Angel sitting outside the café with the late-morning sun perfectly gilding his handsome features as if he were truly an angel just popping down to earth for an espresso, he knew he should walk in the opposite direction.

So, it was only natural for his feet to carry him straight to the man’s table to plop into the open seat as if he’d been invited.

And it was only natural that he invite him out for dinner and more sex when he was supposed to be laying low while waiting for the goddamn buyer to finally crawl out of his fucking hole.

But he couldn’t bring himself to regret it, no matter what his brain was telling him.

If he hadn’t spoken to him, hadn’t gone for that stupid cheese, he would not have this adorable nymph in his bed yet again.

Of course, his ass also wouldn’t ache and his balls wouldn’t feel like dust, but it was all worth it for the bone-deep weariness and overwhelming feeling of relaxation that gripped him now.

Was it wrong that he liked Angel?

Yes, he knew most of the personal things that fell from the man’s plush lips were complete lies. Angel was definitely not his name.

But how could he fault Angel’s need for privacy for whatever reason? It wasn’t as if he’d dropped a lot of truthful revelations during their two evenings together.

He liked Angel’s sharp mind and twisted sense of humor. There was a dark side to the man that he tried very hard to keep hidden, but here and there it would slip out before Angel could catch it. Part of him wanted to know where that dark side came from. What had warped his sense of humor that his smiles were more often than not started as smirks, as if he were laughing at some inside joke.

Ah, another lifetime, he mentally sighed.

Maybe in another lifetime they could have had something. If they’d met when Soren wasn’t up to his eyeballs in collecting illegal things and Angel wasn’t…well, Angel wasn’t doing whatever shady thing he was doing, they might have been able to have something. It probably wouldn’t have lasted long, but the wistful romantic buried deep inside liked to think that it would have at least been more than sex.
